Background
For the 2nd Semester of my 2nd Year at University, I was given 3 modules to work on, a dissertation prep module, a Maths focused Module and a Design focused Module.
Climate Controller was for this Design Module, having a focus on learning new facets of Design and how to both incorporate and iterate on these learnings. Specifically, within both a project and a Game Design Document (GDD).
When I started this module, I was unsure on what aspect to pursue, that being Stealth Mechanics or Strategy Mechanics. I ultimately went with Strategy Mechanics which evolved in this project. To find out more about this project check out my previous blog post here!
The Plan™
As mentioned the Post-Mortem, I want to continue with this project, fleshing it out into a proper game that I could potentially release. Not only this, but I'm planning on making Dev Log Videos about this process, showing off my Design process. These would be quick updates that would explain how I went about and Why I went about, changing what I changed along with showing what I did that was wrong and how it was improved, so look out for those in the future here!
But Anyways, onto the plan. There's 3 main goals to this cycle of development.
General Polish and Bug Fixing
Simplification and/or addition of mechanics to make stats have more purpose
greater content (new levels, scenarios etc.)
General Polish and Bug Fixing is a focus on improving what I already have, making animations, transitions and interaction more clear and feel more interactive to the player (e.g., sounds or animations).
The Simplification and/or addition of mechanics is something I've been thinking about for a while as some stats are less important than others, even becoming largely redundant outside their use case. This is why I wanted to either remove the mechanic or add something for them to interact with that ties more into the game's themes and general management of the Regions. An Example of this would be a Science Funding Screen that the player can spend accumulated Science of specific technologies or Power Plants that impact the Sub-Regions.
Greater Content is adding more to what's already around the base game such as the addition of more scenarios and Regions that gives the player more ways of interacting with the mechanics other than the 1 level currently implemented.
Goal
I'm hoping with all these additions the game can become something that is both more enjoyable to play and more engaging while serving as a complete project that shows of my process when Designing games for any interested parties.
My main priority now is planning what I should tackling with my redesign, starting with identifying the information that could be better presented or changed entirely.
Oh! along with a name change since "Climate Controller" doesn't really fit. Have a look out on my Socials for any updates on this project, this is going to be my priority until my Final Year at University kicks back up!
Until Next Time!
